Walmer in Bloom Campaign 2010

LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS DEMONSTRATE EXPERT CREATIVE SKILLS FOR THE LAUNCH OF THE ‘WALMER IN BLOOM 2010’ CAMPAIGN

Pupils from The Downs School and The Parochial School once again displayed their creative talents during this year’s ‘Walmer in Bloom’ Poster Competition, which marked the launch of the annual ‘Walmer in Bloom’ Campaign sponsored by Walmer Parish Council.

Once again standard of entries was high with Alex Catherick of The Downs CE Primary School winning the competition with his sophisticated design of a purple bell-shaped flower reflecting the shape of the lighthouse incorporated in the school logo. Alex created a sense of movement by incorporating a lively, somersaulting bumble bee into the design. His winning image will appear on the publicity material for the Local Garden Competition.   Winner of the Junior category, Finn Hoffman of the Parochial CE Primary School, produced a brightly coloured pot of flowers in bold primary colours together with crawling and fluttering wildlife and his winning image will appear on the certificates for the School Poster Competition and the Local Garden Competition.

Cllr Pat Heath, Chairman of Walmer Parish Council and Cllr Mrs Sue Le Chevalier, Walmer in Bloom Committee Chairman, awarded both winners a certificate and art case.  The judges also wished to acknowledge the effort of Archie English of The Parochial School who was awarded a Highly Commended (Special Mention) certificate.   Highly Commended Certificates were awarded to Bethia Craig and Saffron Miles of The Parochial School and to the following members of The Downs School: Charlotte Callan, Ben Neary, Bradley Peay, Soul Hunter, Julie Callan, Cynthia Lama, Bonnie Price and Harvey Butt. Certificates of Achievement will be distributed to all pupils who took part in the competition.

Cllr Pat Heath commented, ‘We are very grateful to pupils and staff of both The Downs School and Parochial School for their time and commitment in supporting the School Poster Competition, which is an important part of the Walmer in Bloom Campaign’. Speaking about the Campaign this year, Cllr Sue Le Chevalier said, “We are delighted to be able to extend our array of hanging baskets along Walmer Green this year, with two additional displays being erected near the Lifeboat House. This year also marks the launch of our ‘Walmer in Bloom’ Photographic Competition at the Picnic on the Green event on 21 August’.

In July, judging will take place for the annual local garden competition and the Walmer in Bloom Committee welcomes entries from people of all abilities for the Photographic Competition in August. For further details of how you can help the Committee, sponsor prizes for the local garden competition or enter the Photographic Competition, contact the Parish Council office on 01304 381506.
